New Creatives is an exciting new talent development scheme that offers commissioning opportunities for emerging artists to create new artistic works in film, or audio or interactive media, designed for BBC platforms.
Screen South is running the New Creatives project for the South East region
Who can apply?
We are looking for South East based emerging talent with strong creative ideas and a drive to create and deliver their commissions. Artists must be aged 16-30 and want to develop their original creative idea into a professional short film, audio or interactive media work.
New Creatives can come from any artistic discipline including, but not limited to, any or all of the following - Dancers, Actors, Performers, Musicians, Writers, Filmmakers, Animators Comedians, Visual Artists, Poets, Spoken-word Artists, Rappers, Storytellers and Games Designers, as well as non-arts backgrounds. You don’t need experience in film, audio or interactive to apply. We welcome proposals from artists of all backgrounds, including those from minority ethnic groups, those who consider themselves to be disabled and those who are currently underrepresented in media and the visual arts.
What ideas are we looking for?
We’re open to creative and thought provoking ideas for new works that are fresh and innovative proposals for short films, audio and interactive media that reflects on living in modern Britain in some way. Tonally, they can be serious, comedic, absurd, challenging, provocative, abstract or polemic. We’re looking for creatives to push the boundaries on what constitutes art, makes people think, and encourages new ways of understanding ourselves and the world we live in. We can accept any ideas that are not journalism or current affairs documentary.

Shortlisted applicants will get the opportunity to pitch to the BBC and Screen South execs and the best ones will be commissioned.
Each commissioned New Creative will receive a budget, professional mentoring and support to produce a broadcast quality work.
Finished work is delivered to BBC and may be selected for a new strand, BBC Introducing Arts, which will showcase and introduce new artistic talent from across the UK via all BBC platforms – on BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, BBC television and radio – and beyond. We’ll look to identify the best platform for each idea.
This is a unique partnership between the BBC, Arts Council England and five creative media production organisations across England, Screen South (South East), Calling the Shots (South West), ICA (London), the Rural Media Company (Midlands), and Tyneside Cinema (The North).
